For animal lovers, pets are like children. There’s nothing some of us wouldn’t do for our beloved four legged family members. I prefer pets in fact. You don’t have to put them through college and they don’t grow up to hate you (they in fact give you unconditional love); and you seldom have to support them for 18 years or more. What’s not to love? But what happens to the family feline when the marriage goes south? Where does the cat go?

The Cat Came Back

If the cat was yours before you got married you might stand a better chance of getting custody of your cat in a divorce. And as much as I love animals I can’t help but think of so many more crucial subjects for concern when it comes to divorce. But because of my love for animals—I understand. Hopefully you have retained a lawyer to represent you in this divorce. And when it comes to child custody, division of assets, who gets the car, who gets the house and apparently who gets the cat; they will be the one to represent your interests in a court of law. I’m sure that people have gone to court fighting over lesser pieces of community property than ‘Whiskers’.

Who’s a Better ‘Parent’?

If on the other hand you’re soon to be ex spouse was abusive to your family feline, and you can prove it, you should most definitely succeed at gaining custody of your cat. Witnesses, videos and recordings might help determine whether or not your cat was abused by another family member. It is against the law to abuse animals and it will not be taken lightly in a court of law. Child abuse is just one step further from the animal abuse, and spousal abuse not far behind. A person that is mean to a helpless animal in no way shape or form deserves the company of the animal.

Heck, in my opinion that disgusting individual deserves less than life. Ft. Worth divorce lawyers will inform you of the property laws when it comes to a custody dispute over the family pet.
